Magnesium Supplements: How to Choose the Best Magnesium in India

Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems in the body, including those involved in muscle and nerve function and energy production. Many people choose a magnesium supplement when their diet falls short. This guide explains what to look for in a magnesium supplement in India, which form to choose, how much to take, and when to be careful.

How much magnesium do adults need?

India's Recommended Dietary Allowance (ICMR-NIN 2020, adopted by FSSAI in 2021) is 440 mg a day for adult men and 370 mg a day for adult women. That figure is total magnesium from food and supplements combined. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, pulses and green leafy vegetables are the best food sources.

For supplements specifically, the US National Institutes of Health sets an upper limit of 350 mg a day of magnesium from supplements for adults. Magnesium from food does not count towards this limit.

What to look for in a magnesium supplement

What to check Why it matters Magneva
Elemental magnesium per serving Labels often show the weight of the whole compound. Only the elemental figure tells you how much magnesium you actually get. 350 mg elemental magnesium per tablet
Form of magnesium Forms differ in how well they are absorbed and how often they upset the stomach. Magnesium bisglycinate
Added nutrients Vitamin B6 is commonly paired with magnesium. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl) 1.9 mg
Serving size One tablet a day is easier to stick to than several. 1 tablet a day
Suitable for vegetarians Some capsules use gelatin. Vegan tablet

Common forms of magnesium compared

Form What it is Typically chosen for
Magnesium bisglycinate (glycinate) Magnesium bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine Daily use, sleep and relaxation routines; generally gentle on the stomach
Magnesium citrate Magnesium bound to citric acid General supplementation; has a mild laxative effect at higher doses
Magnesium oxide A dense, inexpensive form with a high magnesium content by weight Low-cost tablets; less well absorbed and more likely to cause loose stools
Magnesium malate, threonate and others Magnesium bound to other carrier molecules Specific uses; usually more expensive

Magnesium bisglycinate vs magnesium glycinate

These usually describe the same thing. "Bisglycinate" spells out that each magnesium atom is bound to two glycine molecules; "glycinate" is the shorter everyday name. When comparing products, check the elemental magnesium per serving rather than the name.

Magnesium for sleep: what the evidence says

Magnesium plays a role in nerve signalling and relaxation, which is why many people take it in the evening. The research on sleep is still limited: a 2021 review of three small trials (151 older adults) found that magnesium shortened the time taken to fall asleep by about 17 minutes on average, with no significant change in total sleep time, and rated the evidence as low to very low quality. Magnesium is best seen as one part of a healthy sleep routine, not a sleeping pill.

How to take a magnesium supplement

  • Dose: follow the label. For Magneva, that is 1 tablet a day.
  • Best time to take magnesium: consistency matters more than timing. If you take it for sleep and relaxation, 30–60 minutes before bedtime is a common choice.
  • With food or water: taking it with water or a light meal can reduce stomach upset.
  • Don't double up: Magneva provides 350 mg, which is the full NIH upper limit for magnesium from supplements, so avoid other magnesium-containing supplements or antacids unless your doctor advises it.

Magnesium bisglycinate side effects and safety

Magnesium bisglycinate is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects of magnesium supplements are loose stools, nausea and stomach cramps, usually at higher doses. Very high doses can be dangerous, especially for people with kidney problems.

Speak to your doctor before taking a magnesium supplement if you:

  • have kidney disease;
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • take antibiotics such as doxycycline or ciprofloxacin (these should be taken at least 2 hours before, or 4–6 hours after, magnesium);
  • take bisphosphonates for bone health (separate them from magnesium by at least 2 hours);
  • take diuretics or have taken acid-reducing medicines (PPIs) for more than a year.

Who might consider a magnesium supplement?

  • People whose diet is low in whole grains, nuts, seeds and green vegetables
  • Adults who want to support their evening wind-down routine
  • People who exercise regularly and want to support normal muscle function
  • Anyone advised by their doctor to increase magnesium intake

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best magnesium supplement in India?

There is no single best product for everyone. Look for a clearly stated elemental magnesium dose, a well-absorbed form such as bisglycinate, a dose that stays within the 350 mg supplemental limit, and a brand that lists all ingredients. Magneva provides 350 mg elemental magnesium as bisglycinate with vitamin B6 in one vegan tablet.

What are magnesium bisglycinate tablets used for?

People commonly take them to support normal muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism and an evening wind-down routine, and to top up magnesium when their diet is low in it.

Can I take magnesium every day?

Yes, magnesium supplements are designed for daily use at the dose on the label. Do not exceed the recommended dose unless your doctor advises it.

How long does magnesium take to work?

It varies from person to person. Most people take it daily for several weeks before judging whether it suits them.

Can I take magnesium with other supplements?

Usually, yes. Check the labels of any other products for added magnesium so your total from supplements stays within the recommended limit, and ask your pharmacist about spacing it from any medicines you take.
