Support Restful Sleep and Muscle Recovery with Magneva Bisglycinate

Medically reviewed by Dr. Reina Punj, MBBS, PG Diploma in Endocrinology (University of South Wales), Lead Physician, Excelgenics Clinical Panel.

Magnesium is an essential mineral and a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems. It contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal muscle function, normal nervous system function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Although it is present in nutrient-dense foods, dietary intake can fall short, particularly among older adults, physically active people and those whose diets rely on refined cereals.

Magneva by Excelgenics uses magnesium bisglycinate, a chelated form in which magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine. It is generally reported to be gentle on digestion. Vitamin B6 is included because it contributes to normal psychological function and to normal nervous system function.

Magnesium and Winding Down

Magnesium naturally regulates NMDA receptors, which help control how excitable nerve cells are, and laboratory research suggests it may also interact with GABA receptors, part of the brain's main calming system. Most of this evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than human sleep research.

These mechanisms are why magnesium is commonly considered as evening nutritional support. Magneva provides 350 mg of elemental magnesium per tablet, and the suggested time to take it is 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Ongoing difficulty sleeping should be discussed with a doctor; a supplement is not a treatment for a sleep disorder.

Muscle Function and Recovery

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function through its role in regulating calcium movement within muscle cells, the process underlying both contraction and relaxation. It also contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal protein synthesis, both relevant to recovery after physical activity.

Requirements can be higher in people who train intensively, as magnesium is lost through sweat. This is why magnesium is a common consideration for athletes and physically active adults.

Broader Physiological Roles

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, which includes the smooth muscle of blood vessel walls, and to electrolyte balance. It also contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and to normal cell division.

These statements describe magnesium's normal roles in the body, not any therapeutic effect.

Why the Bisglycinate Form

Magnesium forms differ in how well they are absorbed. Chelated forms and soluble forms such as citrate are generally better absorbed than magnesium oxide, which is also more often linked to loose stools. In one randomised trial, magnesium citrate gave the highest blood levels of the forms tested, so bisglycinate has not been shown to be better absorbed than citrate.

The practical case for bisglycinate is tolerability: it is often reported to be gentle on the stomach, which makes regular daily use easier. No form of magnesium is free of digestive side effects for everyone.

Who Might Consider Magneva

Magneva is intended for adults wanting nutritional support for rest, muscle function and everyday energy. It may suit people whose diets are low in leafy greens, nuts, seeds and whole grains, and physically active individuals with higher requirements.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have reduced kidney function, or take prescription medication, particularly for the heart or blood pressure, consult your doctor before use. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Safety

  • The NIH upper limit for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day for adults. Magneva provides 350 mg, so do not take it alongside other magnesium supplements.
  • Possible side effects include loose stools, nausea and stomach cramps.
  • If you have kidney disease, speak to your doctor first.
  • Magnesium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (tetracyclines and quinolones) and bisphosphonates. Separate them as your doctor or pharmacist advises.

In Summary

Magneva delivers 350 mg of elemental magnesium (from 1,590 mg magnesium bisglycinate) with 1.9 mg vitamin B6 in one vegan tablet a day, in a form that is generally well tolerated. It is made under an FSSAI licence.
