Can We Take Omega 3 at Night? Here’s What Science Says

Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most talked-about nutrients for heart and brain health. Many people know they matter, but one question keeps coming up: "When is the best time to take omega-3? Can I take omega-3 at night?"

Let's look at what the evidence says, especially for vegetarian omega 3 supplements made from plant sources.

Understanding Omega-3 and Its Importance

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of fats. One of them, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is essential: your body cannot make it. The other two, EPA and DHA, come mainly from oily fish and algae. Your body converts only a small amount of ALA into EPA and DHA, with reported rates of less than 15%.

Many people now prefer plant based omega 3 supplements to fish oil. These come from two different sources: flaxseed oil, which provides ALA, and algal oil, which provides DHA (and sometimes EPA). They are not interchangeable, so it is worth knowing which one you are buying.

If you are vegetarian or vegan, omega 3 vegetarian capsules are a convenient way to add omega-3 alongside foods such as ground flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts.

Morning vs Night: What's the Right Time to Take Omega-3?

There is no strong evidence that one time of day is better than another. What does help absorption is taking it with food that contains some fat.

1. Taking Omega-3 in the Morning

  • Many people find supplements easiest to remember with breakfast.
  • Taken with a meal that contains some healthy fats, omega-3 is absorbed better.

2. Taking Omega-3 at Night

  • If dinner is your main meal, taking your omega 3 vegetarian supplement with it is a sensible way to pair it with dietary fat.
  • Research on omega-3 and sleep is limited and has mostly used fish-oil or DHA supplements, so there is no good evidence that a flaxseed oil capsule at night improves sleep.
  • If you often forget morning doses, taking it with dinner can help consistency.

In short, there is no strict rule: you can take your vegetarian omega 3 capsules morning or night. What matters most is consistency and taking it with a meal.

Can You Take Omega-3 on an Empty Stomach?

It's best not to. Omega-3s are fats and are absorbed better alongside other dietary fat. Taking a capsule on an empty stomach may also make mild side effects such as heartburn or nausea more likely.

Take your plant based omega 3 supplement with a balanced meal, for example breakfast with nuts or seeds, or dinner cooked with a little oil.

What the Science Says About Omega-3

Much omega-3 research is about EPA and DHA from fish, not ALA from plants, so those results should not be assumed to apply to flaxseed oil.

  1. Heart health: In a large meta-analysis of observational studies, higher dietary ALA intake was associated with a moderately lower risk of cardiovascular disease. This is an association, not proof that supplements cause a benefit. ALA also contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels at a daily intake of about 2 g.
  2. Brain and eyes: DHA is a major structural fat in the brain and retina. ALA's role is mostly indirect, because little of it becomes DHA.
  3. Inflammatory balance: EPA and DHA are involved in the body's normal inflammatory signalling. Evidence for ALA alone is weaker.
  4. Mood: Some trials of EPA-rich fish-oil supplements have reported improvements in depressive symptoms, but results are mixed, and they do not apply to ALA or flaxseed oil.

A flaxseed-based vegetarian omega 3 supplement is best thought of as a way to add ALA to your diet, not a substitute for EPA and DHA.

Why Choose Excelgenics Omegaco?

Excelgenics Omegaco is a plant based omega 3 supplement for people who follow a vegetarian lifestyle.

Here's what makes it different:

  • Plant-based: 560 mg of cold-pressed flaxseed oil per capsule, in a plant-based vegetarian capsule with no fish derivatives.
  • A source of ALA: an estimated ~300 mg of ALA per capsule. Omegaco does not contain EPA or DHA.
  • No preservatives and no fishy aftertaste.
  • Easy to take: one capsule daily with a meal containing healthy fats, morning or night.

~300 mg of ALA is roughly a quarter of the adequate intake for adult women (1.1 g a day) and under a fifth of that for men (1.6 g a day), so it is a top-up to an omega-3-aware diet. If you specifically want EPA or DHA, algal oil is the vegetarian source.

Safety: Flaxseed oil can cause bloating or loose stools in some people and might interact with blood-thinning medicines, so check with your doctor first if you take them. Avoid it in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it.

Omega-3 supplements are not designed to produce effects you can feel quickly. Blood omega-3 levels change gradually with regular intake, so think of it as a long-term dietary habit rather than a quick fix.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Omega-3 Supplement

  1. Take your capsule with a meal that has some healthy fats.
  2. Take it at roughly the same time each day.
  3. Include ALA-rich foods such as ground flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts.
  4. Store capsules in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
  5. Pair it with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet.

Final Thoughts

So, can you take omega-3 at night? Yes. Morning or evening, what matters is taking your supplement regularly with food.

If you follow a vegetarian diet, Excelgenics Omegaco is a simple way to add plant-based ALA to your day: one omega 3 vegetarian capsule with a meal.
